The death of a surfer once again raises concerns over extreme tourism in the Maldives. The incident occurred just days after authorities confirmed the discovery of the bodies of five Italian divers who disappeared during a dive in underwater caves more than 50 meters deep in the Vaavu Atoll.
The Maldives Islands are going through weeks marked by a series of accidents linked to water activities after a 53-year-old Spanish surfer died while surfing in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, in the south of the archipelago. Local authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the surfer’s death. He had been traveling aboard a tourist boat and had reached an area near Vaadhoo Island, known for its waves and ideal surfing conditions.

Although both cases involve different activities, the surfer’s death has once again raised alarms about the risks associated with adventure tourism in the Maldives. According to international media, this would be the third accident involving foreign tourists in just a few weeks, after a Spanish tourist lost a leg following a tiger shark attack in the waters of Gaafu Alif Atoll on April 11.
The series of accidents has generated concern regarding safety measures for water activities in one of the world’s most famous tourist destinations, especially in disciplines that depend on extreme ocean conditions such as surfing, technical diving, and underwater expeditions.

In fact, a total of 112 tourists have died in sea-related incidents in the Maldives over the past four years, according to information shared during a meeting of the Parliamentary Regulations Committee, where Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim presented the figures obtained from the Maldives Police Service, questioning the current regulations in the country’s main foreign currency-generating sector.
However, the Director General of the Maldives Ministry of Tourism, Aishath Ali, clarified that not all of the reported deaths in recent months were directly related to maritime accidents. According to her, in some cases the victims experienced difficulties while swimming despite the absence of a specific incident at sea.

She also confirmed that the Ministry is currently working on new regulations focused exclusively on strengthening tourist safety in beach and maritime sports activities. The objective is to reduce deaths and accidents through stricter oversight and regulations for all entities involved in maritime tourism in the Maldives.
