At just 20 years old, the surfer is experiencing one of the most important moments of her career after leading the 2026 National Circuit and being confirmed as part of Costa Rica’s delegation for the 2026 Pan American Surfing Games, reaffirming her international projection.
Born on March 26, 2006, Rachel spent much of her childhood in Río Segundo, in the province of Alajuela. Despite growing up far from the ocean, she developed a strong connection with the sea and surfing from an early age, which led her family to make a key decision: move to Jacó so she could train more frequently and pursue her dream of becoming a professional surfer.

Her first coach was Ariel Gutiérrez, who taught her the fundamentals and guided her through her first steps in the sport. Over time, Agüero became a local in Jacó, where she built strong ties with the community, always highlighting the importance of respect for others and the environment.
Early achievements and competitive growth
One of her first major milestones came in 2021, when she was crowned champion in the Junior and Open categories at the Central American Surfing Games held in Nicaragua, establishing herself as one of Costa Rica’s top surfing prospects.

Her progression continued over the years, competing in national and international events where she gained experience and strengthened her competitive style. At the 2024 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship, Agüero was the top representative from her country after finishing 11th in the world, showcasing her level against the best junior surfers on the planet.

However, her path has not been without challenges. In her pursuit of growth, many of her current victories have come from the lessons learned through defeat.
2025 marked a turning point
In June, Rachel Agüero was crowned Costa Rica’s National Open Women’s Champion, consolidating her status as one of the country’s leading figures. Months later, in October, she added another major achievement by winning the silver medal in shortboard at the 2025 Central American Games in Guatemala, confirming her growth within regional surfing.

In addition to her regional accomplishments, the surfer has been building her career within the World Surf League, showing steady progress in the women’s Qualifying Series (QS). Her results reflect gradual growth within the international circuit, particularly during the 2024/2025 season, where she finished inside the Top 25 of the ranking.

A rising present
From the waves of Jacó to international competitions, Rachel Agüero stands out for her progressive and dynamic surfing, combining speed, critical maneuvers and solid wave reading.

Currently, the surfer continues building her path with discipline and talent as one of the leading representatives of Costa Rican women’s surfing and an emerging figure in Latin American surfing.
