The Countdown Begins for the Tahiti Pro as Kelly Slater Returns to Teahupo'o on a Wildcard

With less than two weeks to go before the start of the Outerknown Tahiti Pro Presented by I-SEA, anticipation is building for the seventh stop of the 2026 Championship Tour (CT), scheduled to run from August 8–18 at the legendary wave of Teahupo'o in French Polynesia.
Located on Tahiti's southwest coast, Teahupo'o is renowned for its perfect barrels breaking over an extremely shallow reef. The power of its waves, combined with the precision required for every maneuver, makes it one of the most demanding and high-risk events on the tour, where experience often proves decisive.
After hosting the surfing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Teahupo'o remains one of the most prestigious venues on the international surfing calendar. This year's event will once again bring together the world's best surfers, with the highly anticipated return of 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater as its biggest attraction. At 54 years old, Slater returns to the Championship Tour after spending several months away from competition following hip surgery.
The WSL awarded Slater a wildcard in recognition of his remarkable legacy at Teahupo'o, one of the most successful venues of his career. He has claimed five victories at the break, delivered some of the most iconic performances in surfing history, and demonstrated over decades an unmatched ability to master one of the heaviest and most technical waves on the planet.
As for the tour, after the stop in Tahiti, the tour will continue on to Cloudbreak, another of the most iconic waves on the planet, to host the Fiji Pro Presented by Corona Cero from August 25 to September 4. This event is known for its long walls, powerful tubular sections, and conditions that often push even the most experienced competitors to their limits.
With two of the world’s most spectacular waves on the horizon and the return of one of the sport’s greatest legends, the Pacific leg promises to be one of the most anticipated moments of the 2026 Championship Tour and a key stage in determining who will enter the season’s final stretch with a real shot at the world title.
