Surf’s influence sometimes reaches further than we imagine. This time, even into the Barbie universe.

Legendary Australian surfer Stephanie Gilmore has been recognized as one of the figures in the first Barbie Dream Team, an initiative created by the brand Barbie to highlight women who have made a difference in their industries in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The project brings together global role models from sports, science and culture who have paved the way for new generations. Among them is Gilmore, considered one of the most influential figures in the history of women’s surfing.

The Australian surfer has built an extraordinary career within the World Surf League, where she achieved eight world titles, a milestone that established her as one of the most important champions in the professional circuit.

For Gilmore herself, the recognition carries a meaning that goes beyond trophies. Inspiring new generations to practice sports, especially young girls who dream of entering the water, is an important part of her role as a champion.

The Dream Team also includes other international figures from sports and culture in an initiative that seeks to highlight stories of women who have opened paths in different fields.

Beyond the symbolic aspect, the presence of a surfer in the Barbie universe also reflects the growth women’s surfing has experienced in recent years. A sport that for decades fought for greater visibility now finds new ways to inspire those who come next.

Today, seeing a world champion transformed into a doll representing girls around the world is also a sign of how far that journey has progressed, showing that sometimes the impact of a wave is measured not only in the ocean, but also in the stories it inspires beyond it.
